Please find below my statement on the update to the proposed Ashford Gaming Centre application.
I would like to thank the many residents that have been in touch with me in the last 24 hours.
As you may know, yesterday, April 16th the Government Planning Inspector overruled the appeals made by Spelthorne Borough Council on the proposed adult gaming centre in Ashford.
I am deeply disappointed by this outcome as you may know I took what was for me an unprecedented step of adding my voice to the thousands of other objections to this scheme. So, I, like you, am very frustrated that our voices have not been listened to.
I do note that the Planning Inspector said in their judgement ‘at the time of writing this decision, the emerging local plan has not been found sound or whether any modifications are required. At the hearing it was agreed between the main parties that the emerging local plan is a material consideration, but any considerations carry limited weight.’
Today, I have been in discussions with members of the licensing committee however it is not clear to me that, with planning permission already granted, this has the potential to stop the project. Nevertheless, I will share my concerns with Lisa Townsend, Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey and Surrey GambleAware to see if there is any further course of action that we might take.
Once again, thank you to everyone for getting in touch.
Please find below my previous correspondence on this matter.
''I don't usually intervene in local planning applications such as this but I want to add my voice to the over 600 objections already received from local residents who live and work in the vicinity of the proposed 24 hour adult gaming site.
In an area that does not have a significant late-night economy and indeed has no other 24 hour establishments, I agree with my constituents that this would cause significant noise disturbances. There are concerns about patrons gathering outside the venue late at night, smoking and vaping, loitering and increased vehicle activity, including the running of engines, doors slamming and the sounding of horns.
There are legitimate concerns about an increase in anti-social behaviour which would affect vulnerable members of the community, including single women, young people, and the elderly. The potential risk to public safety far outweighs any of the so-called advantages suggested by the appellants.
The Adult Gaming Centre would not add value to Ashford as a place to shop and dine and it would not contribute positively to the vitality and viability of the town centre.''
'Having read a great many of [the objections], as you know, they raise a number of very reasonable objections many of which I agree with. I do not object to people gambling as their choice of recreation. But I do not want to see an Adult Gaming Centre in Church Road, Ashford.'
